What makes this different
Most statistics calculators return a number and stop. That is fine when you already know what you are doing and unhelpful when you do not — which is most of the time, because people reach for a standard deviation calculator precisely when they are unsure.
Three commitments follow from that:

The calculators and the writing here are maintained by the site's editorial team, working to the standards set out below and to the documented methodology.
We would rather be judged on work that can be checked than on a byline: every calculator shows its arithmetic, every method names its source, and the statistics engine has a published test suite. If a number here is wrong, it can be demonstrated to be wrong.
Editorial standards
- Every worked example is computed, not written from memory. The numbers in the prose are generated by the same engine that powers the calculators, and checked against it. Two errors were caught this way during the initial build.
- The engine is tested. An automated suite checks textbook datasets, published t-table values, and the equivalences that must hold between related calculators — grouped data against raw data, weighted against unweighted.
- Uncertainty is stated, not hidden. Where a convention is contested — the definition of a quartile, the denominator for weighted data — the page says so and names which choice was made.
- Pages carry a visible last-updated date reflecting when the substance actually changed, not an automatic timestamp bumped by a rebuild.
Reporting an error
If a number here is wrong, or an explanation is misleading, that is worth knowing about and it will be corrected rather than argued over. Every calculation is reproducible from the documented method, so a disagreement can be settled by working through it rather than by taking anyone's word for it.
What this site is not
It is not a substitute for statistical advice on a real decision. The calculators are correct and the explanations are careful, but choosing the right analysis for a particular question is a different problem from computing it, and no calculator can do that part for you.
