Standard deviation quiz

Fifteen multiple-choice questions on standard deviation and the ideas around it: units, n − 1, variance, standard error, z-scores, the empirical rule and a few calculations by hand. Answer them all, then check your score. Each answer comes with an explanation and a link to the page that covers it.

  1. Question 1. What does the standard deviation of a dataset measure?
  2. Question 2. Heights are measured in centimetres. What unit is their standard deviation in?
  3. Question 3. Why does the sample standard deviation divide by n − 1 instead of n?
  4. Question 4. A teacher has the test scores of all 28 students in a class and wants to describe that class only. Which should they use?
  5. Question 5. A dataset has a variance of 25. What is its standard deviation?
  6. Question 6. A sample of 36 values has a standard deviation of 12. What is the standard error of the mean?
  7. Question 7. IQ scores are roughly normal with mean 100 and standard deviation 15. About what share of people score between 70 and 130?
  8. Question 8. A score of 82 comes from a test with mean 70 and standard deviation 8. What is its z-score?
  9. Question 9. You add 10 to every value in a dataset. What happens to the standard deviation?
  10. Question 10. You multiply every value by 3. What happens to the standard deviation and the variance?
  11. Question 11. One extreme outlier is added to a dataset. Which measure of spread is affected least?
  12. Question 12. A process has mean 50 g and standard deviation 5 g. What is its coefficient of variation?
  13. Question 13. A dataset has a standard deviation of exactly 0. What does that mean?
  14. Question 14. What is the population standard deviation of 2, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 7, 9?
  15. Question 15. What is the sample standard deviation of 1, 3, 5?

What the quiz covers

Questions 1–5 cover what the standard deviation is: its meaning, its unit, and how it relates to the variance. Questions 3–4 deal with the choice between the sample and population formulas. Questions 6–8 cover the standard error, the empirical rule and z-scores. Questions 9–13 test how the standard deviation behaves when data is shifted, rescaled or contains an outlier. The last two ask you to calculate one by hand.

If a question caught you out, the linked page explains the idea in full. The formula sheet collects every formula used here, and the calculator shows each step on your own numbers.
